| The University supports several options for group collaboration. NetFiles and Moodle are described below.
- Moodle - Group Collaboration with External Users -- File Sharing, Discussions, Calendar, and more - If you need to collaborate with external users and/or would like additional options, such as a discussion board, calendar, chat, and a customized Carlson School template, you can request a Moodle site. Moodle is an e-Learning platform centrally supported and administered by the University of Minnesota. Although it is often used as a course management system, it is also a great collaboration tool. As it is centrally controlled, Moodle is FERPA compliant and secure. We have worked with the University's Moodle team to create a customized template for Carlson School, which includes a basic Getting Started Guide for using the Carlson School template. Additional Moodle training is available from the University. If you would like a Carlson School Moodle site, please send a message to csemail@umn.edu.
- NetFiles - Web-accessible File Storage - If you need to store files in a location available to others, but do not require any additional features, you can use NetFiles. NetFiles is a University centrally-supported system that provides file storage and the option to share files with others via the web. Note: You must activate your NetFiles account to use NetFiles.
Microsoft Office Groove - The Carlson School does not currently have an Enterprise version of Groove, therefore we cannot officially support Groove. We understand that there is student interest in using Groove, so we have put together the following WARNINGS and RECOMMENDATIONS for students that choose to use a "public" version of Groove:
- Be aware that Groove is not a supported system and you could lose your setups and files so Carlson School IT recommends that Groove should NOT be the only, relied upon collaboration tool used for your important files. If you want to experiment with it, please be aware of the risks.
- When the basic Groove system that comes with MS Office 2007 is used, the files are stored on a Microsoft server, so it should NOT be assumed that it is private, and it cannot be supported as a University system. It does not meet University FERPA requirements.
- Groove is entirely dependent on YOUR LOCALLY stored Account Profile. The Carlson School IT Student Services do NOT have access to any Groove administration, so they cannot restore access to any files that are corrupted or deleted.
- You are at risk for losing access to your Groove files if the student Groove Administrator(s) that configure your system have Account Profile problems, and this has occurred.
- WARNING: The Encrypted Account Profile files are susceptible to corruption. RECOMMENDATION: back up a copy of this file on NetFiles
- WARNING: If the file is corrupted or deleted, the end user must set up a new account and contact ALL site Admins to send a NEW invitation. RECOMMENDATION: Have more then one site Administrator for backup purposes
