My experience in the Finance PhD program at the Carlson School has been challenging yet rewarding. The finance program offers its students rigorous training in a broad range of research methodologies in finance and economics, and allows us to be adequately prepared for an academic career. There is plenty of flexibility in choosing what we want to do. Moreover, the University of Minnesota is a great place in terms of resources for research - it has world-class Economics, Mathematics and Statistics departments where most finance students can get benefits. I feel very lucky to have attended the Carlson School for my doctoral studies.

The research environment in the department is very supportive. Students never feel intimidated to talk to faculty members. Instead, professors and students interact regularly and actively about research ideas. I have benefited tremendously from working closely with faculty members on a variety of projects. The department also provides great opportunities for us to interact with researchers from all over the world through hosting regular workshops. Not only do we get guidance on our research, but there are also many established ways to develop our teaching skills.

Research support for PhD students is excellent: various research fellowships, generous research budget, convenient access to research databases and academic journals, and world class faculty in related disciplines. All the elements are in place, and one just needs to take advantage of them.

Besides offering a great school, the Twin Cities are a great place to live. There is a diverse, multicultural, and open-minded environment. There are a great range of exciting activities all year round. If you are interested in a finance PhD program, I would not hesitate to say that this department ranks among the best in the world.
