Today, there is a growing importance that employment be given a "human face," according to John Budd, Industrial Relations Landgrant Term professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. His new book, "Employment With a Human Face: Balancing Efficiency, Equity, and Voice," addresses the classical principals underlying modern human resources. It will be released in March by Cornell University Press. Budd will sign copies of his book at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25, at the Industrial Relations Reference Room, 280 Hubert H. Humphrey Center, 301 19th, Ave. S., Minneapolis. In his book, Budd contradicts the traditional view of the employment relationship as a purely economic transaction and argues that the traditional focus on efficiency must be balanced with employees' entitlement to fair treatment and the opportunity to have meaningful input into decisions. Budd supports his triad of efficiency, equity and voice with an intellectual framework for analyzing employment institutions and practices and applies his framework to important employment-related topics, such as workplace governance, industrial relations, labor union strategies and globalization. These analyses create a foundation for reforming employment practices, social norms and public policies. Sponsored by the Carlson School’s CHRLS Alumni Association and Friends of the Reference Room, the book signing is part of the Reference Room Writer Series. Tickets are $5 for students and Friends of the Reference Room and $10 for faculty, alumni and others.
