Carlson School Case Competition to Award $15,000 in prizes

A new case writing competition sponsored by the Carlson School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Minnesota will award $15,000 in cash prizes for the best written case on new business ventures in Minnesota and new products developed by Minnesota companies. The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in business administration at any college or university in Minnesota and to those who graduated in 2003.

The three entry categories include:

  • New product that is less than five years past initial commercial introduction. First sales of the product should be in 1999 or after. The product should have been developed in Minnesota or the company should be headquartered in Minnesota.

  • New Minnesota business venture that is less than five years old. The first sales by the venture should be 1999 or after. The venture should be headquartered in Minnesota.

  • New Minnesota business venture with first commercial sales in 2003 or 2004. The venture should be headquartered in Minnesota.

Up to five winners in each of the three categories will each receive from $200 to $3,000 in cash prizes. Entrants will be judged on how well the case is written and presented. The case should be interesting, intellectually challenging and teach the entrepreneurial or new product development process. The entry deadline is Friday, April 2, and the cases are due Monday, April 12. Winners will be announced at a special event the week of May 3.

A workshop will be held 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the Carlson School of Management, 321 19th Ave. S., Minneapolis, to teach students how to write the case. This workshop is free and open to all those who are interested in participating in the case writing competition.
