James Bruton on Campus to Discuss New Book
James Bruton, former warden of the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights, will discuss his book The Big House: Life Inside a Supermax Security Prison at the University of Minnesota Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union on Thur., Sept. 16, 2 p.m.

Mentorship Program Information Sessions
Attend one of the REQUIRED Mentorship Program Information Sessions Sept. 15-17 to learn about the program and hear from students who have previously participated in the program.  Sessions will be held on:

  • Wed., Sept. 15 - 3 sessions, Room 2-207

If you have previously participated in the program and want to take part in the program again this year, with either a new or the same mentor, you do not have to attend one of the information sessions, but you must complete the on-line application again.

BAM Social Get Together
The Business Association of Multicultural Students (BAM) will sponsor a "social get together" on Wed. Sept. 15, 4-5 p.m. This will be BAM's first official meeting of the 2004-05 academic year.

Business Board Meeting
Carlson's undergraduate student government body will hold its first meeting of the 2004-05 academic year on Wed., Sept. 15, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Undergraduate Lounge.  All students are welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not you have been involved with Business Board before.  We will be discussing many topics, one of which will be the Freshmen Elections to be held on Wed., Sept. 22, where we will be electing two freshmen to serve on Business Board. All interested freshmen are strongly encouraged to attend the Sept. 15 meeting before running for this position. Club MIS Informational Meeting
Club MIS announces their first meeting of the 2004 Fall Semester on Tue., Sept. 14, 12-1 p.m., Room L-118.  The meeting will serve as an informational session for potential new members, including speeches from an instructor and club alumni about the club and the major.  We will also provide FREE LUNCH. Information Sessions
Attend an informational meeting and you will find out everything you need to know about Delta Sigma Pi while you get FREE pizza and pop.  An alumni panel will be on hand to answer your questions about their experiences in Delta Sigma Pi, life after graduation, and anything else you can think of! This will also be an opportunity to learn more about Delta Sigma Pi and to meet some of our members.  There are two separate information sessions scheduled for:

Honors Association Outing to Twins Game
On Wed., Sept. 15, the Carlson Honors Association will be hosting its first social event of the year. We'll be seeing the Twins play the Chicago White Sox. Tickets are free and you can sign up in the Undergraduate Studies Office (Room 1-105). When you sign up we ask for a $10.00 deposit check. When you meet us in the Atrium at 6 p.m. on Wednesday we will give you the ticket and return your uncashed check. We have 40 tickets on a first come first served basis so sign up today! InFO Meeting with General Mills Speaker
The Investment and Finance Organization (InFO) will hold its first meeting of the 2004-05 academic year on Tue., Sept. 14, 12:30-1:30 p.m. The speaker at the meeting will be from General Mills.  The meeting room has not yet been decided, but watch for more details. InFO will meet every Tuesday during Fall Semester from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., lunch will be provided, and the meetings are open to all majors.

ickoff meeting will be held on Tue., Sept. 28. We will have a quick overview of SANE and then hear from Josh LaBau, a social entrepreneur who is currently running a pilot Internet bookselling business for Goodwill/Easter Seals. He will be speaking about how he got involved in social enterprise and what he thinks its potential for the future will be, as well as piloting a new social venture.

Mock Interviews
Are you preparing for fall interviews? Do you feel that your interviewing skills are a bit rusty? Then sign-up for a mock interview in the Undergraduate Business Career Center (UBCC)! This program is designed to help YOU prepare for REAL interviews!

What is involved?

  • The completion of a pre-work packet to help prepare you for interview questions
  • A $20 deposit that will be returned the day of the interview
  • An hour of your time
  • A copy of your current resume that will be left at the UBCC front desk

The details of the interview:

  • The mock interview will be taped and be between 20-30 minutes in length
  • The interviewer will be an MA-HRIR student
  • You will receive both verbal and written feedback at the conclusion of the interview

Carlson School Career Fair 2004 - Volunteers Needed
On Tue., Sept. 21, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., McNamara Alumni Center, students will get the opportunity to speak professionally with recruiters from a variety of companies.  Approximately 55 companies will be in attendance seeking out students with various business majors.  Volunteers are needed to help with the following tasks:

Morning Setup
From 9-11 a.m., the companies will arrive at McNamara Alumni Center and preparing their booths for the fair. Volunteers are needed to meet the recruiters as they arrive and to help them set up their displays.

Student Check-In
During the fair there will be a registration table for the students to check in and receive their nametags and company information sheets. Volunteers will help students check in and answer any questions about the fair.

Cleanup
After the fair we will be putting away all of the tables as well as helping the recruiters take down their booths. We will also make a last quick sweep to make sure McNamara is clean afterwards.

Volunteering is a great way to have extra contact with the recruiters and really make them remember you. Volunteers at the fair will be working two hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Anyone interested in volunteering please contact Matt Kuhlman at kuhl0044@umn.edu with your name, year in school, major, and the time of day you can work.

Communicating in an Interview Workshop

On-Campus Recruiting
Things to remember for on-campus recruiting:

  • For a review of the on-campus recruiting process, please visit the help section of The Edge and be sure to update your registration in CARS.
  • The first week of preferencing is Sept. 13-17. Please remember that preference periods run from Monday at 12:30 p.m. through Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
  • Some of the companies with current postings include: Best Buy, Target, Pepsi Bottling Group, Ernest and Young LLP., Accenture, KPMG, Minnesota Life, Alliant Tech Systems, Ingersol-Rand, and Larson, Allen, Weishair & Co., LLP. 
  • On-campus interviews begin on Mon., Oct. 4, and will continue through Fri., Dec. 10.

Internships for Junior Accounting Majors

Chicago Site Visit for Carlson School Seniors
For the third consecutive fall, the Undergraduate Business Career Center (UBCC) has arranged a student site visit to consulting firms in Chicago. We will be visiting McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and possibly one more world-class consulting firm on Fri., Oct. 1. These companies are interested in meeting 10-15 Carlson School seniors. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the consulting industry and practice your networking skills!

To qualify for the visit, you must commit time and energy with your application, as applications will be judged on a competitive basis. If you are interested in going, please submit your application via email to tsurprenant@csom.umn.edu by Wed., Sept. 15. Your application must include the following:

  • A written summary of your interest in, and knowledge of the consulting industry.
  • A written summary of why you would be interested in working for McKinsey and BCG.
  • A written summary of why you believe you would be an outstanding consultant.

There will be some additional "pre-work" before the visit. This "pre-work" will be reviewed at an hour-long prep session one week prior to the site visit. Details on this will follow.

You will need to arrange your own travel and lodging; however, the UBCC will reimburse up to $200 of your travel costs.

Etiquette Dinner
Join the U of M Campus Career Offices, the Career Development Network, and the U of M Alumni Association for the annual Etiquette Dinner on Thur., Oct. 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Memorial Hall, McNamara Alumni Center. Learn how strong professional etiquette can help you leave a positive impression with prospective employers during interviews or on your first job. At this popular event, a professional etiquette consultant will guide you through a delicious three course meal, while also sharing insights on professional etiquette topics such as appropriate table manners, the proper use of utensils, how to succeed in business dining, and "the handshake." Annual Carlson Recognition Reception
All Carlson students who received a scholarship for the 2004-05 academic year and/or are in the Honors Association are cordially invited to attend the Carlson School of Management's Annual Recognition Reception on Fri., Oct. 15, 4-6 p.m., Carlson School Atrium. This event includes students that have received any Carlson School and/or University scholarships. 

This is a great opportunity to meet with other honor students and scholarship recipients and be recognized for your achievements. We are also inviting benefactors who provided the funds for your scholarship along with your parents. Come and meet our benefactors and thank them for your award. A light buffet will be served.

New International Study Option
The Carlson School's new "Marketing 3001 Global Enrichment Elective" is an exciting way to fulfill the Marketing core with study in the U.S. and France. Students spend Spring Semester Term B (March 21 - May 6) at the Carlson School developing an understanding of marketing and preparing for study in France May 16-26. Case Competition for Carlson School Seniors
The Undergraduate Studies Program office will sponsor a Fall Undergraduate Case Competition on Fri., Sept. 24, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m, Room 2-207. This competition is open to seniors and the winning team will represent the Carlson School at the International Undergraduate Business Case Competition at the University of Texas at Austin, Oct. 20-23.

Important Details:

  • The competition is open to four person teams.
  • Teams will analyze a business case and propose a solution in a 20-minute presentation during the preliminary round that morning.
  • The top two teams will present again in a final round later that afternoon.
  • Lunch will be provided between rounds.
  • Presentations will be judged by Carlson School faculty and external judges from local companies.
  • Teams should be cross disciplinary because the case may focus on any area of business.
  • Sign up your team or individually if you would like to be placed on a team by Tue., Sept. 21, in the Undergraduate Studies Office (Room 1-105).
  • Cases will be handed out to each team at 4 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 22, in the Undergraduate Studies Office (Room 1-105).

Graduate and Professional School Day 2004
Graduate and Professional School Day will be held on Wed., Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Great Hall, Coffman Memorial Union. More than 100 graduate and professional programs from throughout the country will be represented.  This University-wide event, sponsored by the Career and Community Learning Center, will provide students with the opportunity to speak with college and university representatives from law, business, education, health sciences and a variety of other graduate and professional programs. The event will also feature helpful workshops on "How to Apply to Graduate and Professional School" and "Funding Graduate and Professional School". Admission is free and open to the public. Computer Labs
Student computer lab assignment has changed slightly. The middle lab (Room L-112) is now a joint undergraduate and graduate lab. Room L-108 is still an undergraduate only lab and Room L-113 is a graduate student only lab. The labs are for Carlson School students only and should used only for course related work.  The Microsoft Office suite in the labs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) have been updated to Office 2003. ATTENTION SENIORS: Apply To Graduate
If you are completing your coursework this fall, please remember that you must apply to graduate no later than Mon., Sept. 20. "Application for Degree" forms are available in the Undergraduate Studies Office (Room 1-105) and at any of the OneStop Student Service Centers, and may be turned in at either location. Do not miss this deadline - it is a University-wide deadline and it is not flexible!

The Carlson School holds one Commencement Ceremony for all graduates each year. Fall, Spring, and Summer graduates will be invited to participate in the May ceremony, to be held on Sun., May 15, 6 p.m., Northrop Auditorium. If you are finishing your coursework Spring Semester, the "Application for Degree" is due by Mon., Jan. 31.

Benjamin A. Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Programs must be a minimum of four-weeks. Thus, January Term or Winter Intersession programs that are a least four weeks in length are eligible for the Spring cycle of the Gilman Scholarship. For more information, full eligibility criteria and the online application please access the Gilman Program web site or contact the Gilman office directly at 1-888-887-5939.  Application deadline for Spring 2005 is Wed., Sept. 22, 2004.

First Step to Study Abroad Meetings
Begin your study abroad investigation by obtaining information about the different types of programs available, how financial aid applies, and the various resources available to you on the University of Minnesota campus.  All students who participate on a Learning Abroad Center sponsored program must attend this meeting, so why not attend now?? The first First Step meeting will be held on Tue., Sept. 14, 12:30-1:30 p.m., Room 1-143.  Because this meeting is required for participation on Learning Abroad Center programs, no late admission or early departures will be allowed.

America's Changing Economy: Trade Balances, Outsourcing, and Jobs Conference
The Humphrey Institute and the Carlson School of Management will move beyond simple slogans with a conference designed to explore both the positive and negative aspects of recent trade agreements.  We will examine the available evidence on trade balances, financial flows, employment effects and outsourcing.  Advisors to the national political parties will offer their perspectives followed by responses from regional experts.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) offers a stipend (up to $1400) and/or an expense allowance (up to $300) to undergraduates for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.

Workshops have been scheduled to assist students interested in applying for a UROP award.  UROP coordinators and staff will meet with students to describe application procedures, discuss steps in setting up a UROP experience, and analyze what makes a good proposal.

The workshops will be held on:

Call for Nominations for Peer Educators for the Office of Student Academic Integrity
As part of a new Office of Student Academic Integrity (OSAI) program this year, Student Advocates for Academic Integrity will go into classrooms to provide an interactive peer education experience focusing on five values adapted from OSAI's Fundamental Values Project: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. The Center for Writing
The Center for Writing now offers free one-to-one writing assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, with appointments up to 45 minutes. Nonnative speaker specialists are available. Blood Donors and Volunteers Are Sought
Blood donors and volunteers are sought for the U's third annual blood drive. Organizers hope to enlist 240 donors and 40 registration volunteers; volunteers must commit to at least a one-hour shift. LeaderQuest
LeaderQuest is a fun and outstanding experiential leadership development program for freshman through graduate students alike. Students actively learn how to develop and apply their leadership skills through experiential games, role-play scenarios, two retreats, workshops, and facilitating the Siggelkow “all-campus” Immersion Learning Retreat in April 2005. Students are also matched with an experienced mentor who will challenge you to achieve personal and academic success. The program begins January 2005 and ends April 2005. Students will meet once a week on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Meet others who are driven just like you and learn how to be a real leader! Applications are available now. SpeakerQuest
Do you stutter, sweat, and forget what you want to say when you are in front of people? If you dread public speaking, you are not alone. Learn to present with confidence, converse with ease, have fun, and meet new people by joining SpeakerQuest! SpeakerQuest is an eleven-week program designed to build confidence, presentation skills, and how to be a people magnet! Only 20 students are admitted, first-come, first-serve!
