MINNEAPOLIS (May 24, 2006) — Michael Houston, Carlson School of Management interim dean, announced the hiring of Deborah Cundy as the new assistant dean of external relations.  Cundy will help build the school’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally.  She will oversee  marketing services and communications, corporate and alumni relations and development activities.

Cundy’s background includes extensive marketing, communications, corporate philanthropy and government affairs including 17 years at Carlson Companies, where she most recently served as vice president of external relations. She has worked with the Carlson School on several projects, including the Carlson School’s leadership series “Inside the Boardroom” and the Committee of 200 Women’s Conference.  She was instrumental in planning a recent conference with the University of Minnesota’s Human Rights Program on anti-trafficking of children in the tourism industry.  She also serves on the dean’s advisory board at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.

As an independent consultant, she supported the World Economic Forum’s Women Leaders Program and worked closely with the National Women’s Business Council on public policy issues affecting women business owners.

“After a national search, we are fortunate to find someone who not only has the perfect skills for this new position, but who also is very knowledgeable about the Carlson School,” said Houston. “Deborah will be an effective leader to advance the Carlson School’s reputation.”

Cundy holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in liberal studies from Hamline University.
