Undergraduate Internship Program in Scientific Computing and Graphics
The Supercomputing Institute for Digital Simulation and Advanced Computation is pleased to announce an Undergraduate Internship Program for Summer 2005.  Projects will be available in numerous scientific areas.

The focus of the program is the application of computational approaches and visualization methods to supercomputing research.  This includes digital simulation and advanced computation and all aspects of high-performance computing and scientific modeling and simulation as well as graphics, visualization, informatics, and high-performance network communications.

Interns work for faculty members and their research groups on projects using high-performance computing environments to address problems in science and engineering that could not otherwise be attempted.  This program provides an opportunity for a challenging and enriching educational experience for undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate or professional education.

The internship will be full-time for 10 weeks, running June 6 through August 12.  The associated stipend is $4800.

Complete information about the program, including specific research areas and application instructions, can be found on the Supercomputing Institute web site.  Applications are due no later than Mon., Feb. 28.  For more information call 612-626-7620 or email uip@mis.umn.edu .

Wait List for On-Campus Interviews
If students want to be considered for an interview schedule that they could not get on, they may get on the Wait List through CARS. From 12:30 p.m. three days before the interview to 12:30 p.m. the day before the interview, students can get on the Wait List by pressing the Wait List button on any of the posting pages, or by pressing Wait List in the actions for that posting on a student's home page (if the student had previously preferenced for the posting). Students chosen to interview off of the wait list will be called, usually in the morning, the day of the interview.

On–Campus Interview Evaluations
Recruiters are asked to complete a student evaluation after each interview. Stop by the UBCC Office (Room 1-110) to review them or schedule a quick appointment with a career counselor if you have never reviewed them before. Students must have two of their evaluations in their file before they can schedule an appointment.  After, they may look at additional evaluations in groups of three. The BCC assures companies that the invaluable feedback will be kept anonymous; therefore the grouping in threes for review is necessary.

On-Campus Interviewing Cancellation Policy
Students have three business days before the interview date to cancel their on-campus interview. If a student misses their on-campus interview or cancels less than three business days in advance it is considered a "No Show". The student will be required to write a letter of apology to the company and meet with a UBCC counselor before interviewing or using The Edge again. "No Shows" result in being removed from CARS. After two "No Shows", you will lose office privileges.

If an emergency arises students should contact the UBCC front desk at 612-624-0011 as soon as possible so we will not lose the interview opportunity for other students.

New Course on International Business Communication
During Spring Semester 2005, Holly Littlefield will be offering BA 3900: International Business Communication.  The 3-credit course will meet every Monday and Wednesday, 12:45-2 p.m.

The goal of this course is to help students understand the impact of culture and communications on business interactions around the world. This course focuses on business cultures and cross-cultural communication, and helps students develop analytic and adaptation skills. This course will address major cultural differences in communication theory and practice by looking at how cross-cultural differences can and do affect the methods and outcomes of international business. It will examine patterns of organizational structures and hierarchies; value systems and beliefs; language and other forms of communications, and it will explore the ways that business interactions are impacted by cultural dimensions. This course will teach you how to:

  • Discuss and describe how culture impacts communication practices and business processes.
  • Explain strategies and practices to maximize the advantages of diversity and to minimize the uncertainty, confusion, and misunderstanding that can emerge when communicating across cultures.
  • Understand how culture can impact leadership, motivation, decision-making, persuasion, negative message, etc.
  • Discuss how multinational and global organizations deal with intercultural communication problems and opportunities.

The course is open to all students and may be applied toward the International Business major or minor, or it may count as non-business elective credits.

The Instructor for the course is Tom Novitzki, MBA and Attorney at Law. Mr. Novitzki has over 20 years of experience in Purchasing including 10 years as Director of Corporate Purchasing at Northwest Airlines. His experience includes enterprise-wide cross-functional teams, demonstrated corporate cost savings of over $40 million per year, procurement policies, procedures and standards, reduced lead times, and improved integrity of the bid process.
