Accounting 3001: An International Perspective

January 3 - 15, 2010. Classes begin Fall Term B on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-5:25pm at the Carlson School.

Objective:

This course introduces students to the design and use of costing systems to support key operating and strategic decisions of business firms. Students gain an international view point on these topics. Accounting 3001 is an invigorating opportunity for students to fulfill Carlson School’s Functional Core Accounting course (ACCT 3001) with study in both the U.S. and Argentina.

Location »

As the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires offers student the elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America. Known as the “Paris of the Americas” its identity is founded on Spanish, Italian, and French influences, which appear in the grand boulevards, and magnificent architecture. While exploring the city's neighborhoods, visit the small colored houses of La Boca and experience the popular tango that lives in San Telmo streets.
There is also an optional weekend excursion to Iguazu Falls.  One of the most popular destinations in Argentina, Iguazu Falls lie on the triple frontier of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay and draw visitors from all over the world.  The optional excursion departs Buenos Aires on Friday, January 8 and returns Sunday, January 10.  There is an extra fee for this excursion that includes airfare, hotel, breakfast each morning, and a guided tour of the park and waterfalls.

The program starts with a city tour and welcome dinner. During the two weeks students will meet with local business professionals through guest lectures and company site visits. Companies include both domestic and multinational corporations. Cultural tours, dinner with an Argentine family, and tango dancing will complement the academic program. The weekend is free for students to explore the city or attend an optional excursion to Iguazu Falls for an extra fee.

Housing and Food »

Students will have the option to stay with a host family with another Carlson student, or for an extra fee of $300, students can stay in double or triple rooms at a centrally located hotel in the city.  Because networking and community-building are key parts of the program, students will not have the option of a single room. Guests are not permitted during the program. If students choose to stay with a host family, breakfast and one other meal will be provided daily.  If students choose to stay at a hotel, breakfast will be provided daily.  A welcome dinner and closing dinner are also provided.

Costs & Financial Aid »

Participants pay a program fee of $3,000 directly to the University of Minnesota. This fee covers international health insurance, round trip airfare, lodging in Argentina, two group meals, and all breakfasts. Students who prefer to stay at a hotel instead of with a host family will be charged an additional $300. Tuition for three credits is included in the tuition plateau.   Students are responsible for purchasing their own course textbooks. Other meals and personal expenses are not covered by the course fee. Fees are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. Financial Aid can be applied to study abroad programs.

Application & Admission »

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Applications are reviewed on a rolling admissions basis until September 1, 2009.  The program may fill before the deadline.

This program is open to U of M undergraduate students in good academic standing, with a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Students must also have completed ACCT 2050 by Fall Term B. The application process is competitive, and space is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

The Accounting 3001 Global Enrichment program will have a demanding schedule and academic standards will be high. Candidates should demonstrate their motivation and ability to engage fully in the academic program in the application materials and essay. Preference will be given to Carlson School students.

Students will be informed of their status within 4 weeks of the application deadline. If selected, students will be charged a $500 non-refundable deposit in order to confirm a place on the program.
