When a student enters the program, he/she is informed in writing (by way of student handbook) of the standards of performance and progress required to continue in good standing. The standards generally relate to grades in courses, rate or progress toward the degree, and continuing evaluation of research potential. The criteria are clearly articulated and related to the degree program and are applied equally to all students. The relevant detailed criteria may vary from field to field.
