IBUS 5171: Global Business Practicum in Southern China

Location: Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China

Dates: January 4-17, 2015 and five pre-departure sessions during fall B-term, Fridays (dates TBD), 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Term: 2014 Fall, 2-8 weeks

Description: Created as a partnership between Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University, a corporate partner, and the Carlson School, this course challenges students with a live international business project in China.

This course provides students with a unique opportunity to work on cross-cultural teams with students from a school in Guangzhou China to address a business issue posed by a sponsoring company. The course is designed to: increase students ability to work in diverse teams and analyze problems from a global perspective; help students develop a more robust understanding of the business topic of the project; and increase students tolerance for working through ambiguous situations.

Audience and Eligbility

  • The program is open to 25 Carlson graduate students in good academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • The application process is competitive, and space is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
  • Carlson students will work in teams with 10-15 peer business students from Lignan (University) College in Guangzhou

  • Four graduate elective credits
  • Grading is A-F basis

Schedule

Pre-departure:
This course typically includes a program orientation and four, 3-hour predeparture sessions. During pre-departure sessions, students will explore the project topic and global project management through through lecture and discussion, and will begin work on the project for the corporate partner. The pre-departure sessions generally occur on Friday evenings from 4-7 p.m. during the B-term of fall semester. Dates and times for the sessions are TBD.

While abroad:
This program begins in Hong Kong and ends in Guangzhou. While abroad, students participate in cultural activities/tours and continue to explore issues related to the project topic via site visits, fieldwork, class lectures, and work with their MBA counterparts at Lingnan to develop final recommendations for the corporate partner. Students present their findings to the corporate partner during the final days in China. The middle weekend is free for travel and sightseeing.

Post-return:
The sponsor company may request that Carlson students deliver their final recommendations to the U.S. based stakeholders who were unable to attend the final presentation in Guangzhou. This presentation is usually scheduled with one or two weeks of return.

Location

Hong Kong is one of the world's leading financial centers and is characterized by low taxation, free trade, and minimum government intervention.

Guangdong Province is a key transportation and trading region of south China. Guangzhou is the capital city of Guangdong and close to the manufacturing and industrial region of Shenzhen.

Housing and Food

Students are housed at a conveniently-located hotel and will share a room with one or two classmates of their same gender. Because networking and community-building are key parts of the program, students will not have the option of a single room. Guests are not permitted during the program. Breakfast daily, a welcome dinner, and a closing dinner are provided.

Fees are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. This information applies to 2013–2014 programs.

*Calculated based on the estimated 2013-2014 PTMBA tuition rate. Students enrolled in another degree program will be charged the tuition rate for four credits associated with their degree program. Please see One Stop for more information about tuition and fees or contact us with questions.

Application and Admission

To apply, please visit the Apply page. Students will be charged a $50 application fee.

The application cycle starts on March 15, 2014 and the priority deadline is June 15, 2014. Applications for programs that do not fill by the priority deadline will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 1 or until full.

Applications will be reviewed and students will be informed of their status within 4 weeks of the application deadline.
