Undergraduate Global Immersion in China

Guangzhou, China: Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University
Program full for 2013-2014 academic year

Program Type

This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Location and Host School

With over one billion people and unique natural resources, China is the world's largest emerging economy. Since opening its economy to the world over 30 years ago, China has undergone a profound transformation, recently spurred by the award of the 2008 Olympic games and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Guangzhou is the thrid largest Chinese city and southern China's largest city with a population of over 12 million. It is a key national transportation hub and trading port.

Lingnan (University) College is the first business school accredited by both AMBA and EQUIS in South China and is located in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guandong Province. Lingnan has a large international presence with over 100 international exchange students from and around the world annual and 40 quality exchange partners in over 20 countries and regions around the world.

Academic Calendar

Fall semester: September to January*

Spring semester: February to late June

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

*Students are able to make special arrangements for final exams in cases where fall semester final exams conflict with U of M spring semester classes.

Language and Academics

Students are enrolled in 16 S/N Carlson School International Business credits for a semester at Lingnan University. Courses are available in English, including business courses. Prior knowledge of Mandarin is not required. Lingnan recommends that exchange students take no more than 5 courses in one semester. There is one compulsory course, Doing Business in China (China Business Study), which is designed for exchange students. There are Mandarin language courses available to exchange students as well.

There are no on campus accommodations available for exchange students. However, students can easily look for an off-campus apartment through real estate agents and resources at Lingnan. Volunteer buddies in Lingnan will assist exchange students on looking for accommodations.

For more information on housing visit Lingnan University’s International Housing page.
