Undergraduate Global Immersion in South Korea

Seoul, South Korea: Sogang University


This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English or Korean) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Location and Host School

The capital of one of the most rapidly developing nations in East Asia and boasting over 10 million inhabitants, Seoul is an ideal place to study the business, economics and language of Korea. Occupied during the Korean War, much of the city was rebuilt and stands today as one of the regions most modern and “wired” metropolises, while offering the opportunity to visit historically significant palaces and pagodas, and learn the popular Korean martial art of Taekwondo.

Sogang University is located in Mapo-gu, one of Seoul’s 25 districts, or gu, that lies northwest of the Han River. Several universities and government buildings are located here, and it is especially known as a young and hip district, featuring hundreds of restaurants, bars, and night clubs. Neighboring districts include Yongsan-gu, Jung-gu, Seodaemun-gu and Eunpyeong-gu. The Seoul World Cup Stadium, a famous landmark in Seoul, is located in northwest Mapo.

Sogang University is ranked first in Korea among 4 year universities and consistently ranks among the top 5 business schools in Korea. Sogang focuses on providing students with a global education, sending outstanding students to over 200 of its sister Universities around the world every year and welcoming international students to its 50 acre campus in the heart of Seoul. Exchange students have access to such globally oriented facilities as Gonzaga Hall and the English CafÉ, as well as the Institute for International Culture and Education, and the Sogang International Institute for Regional and Cultural Studies.

Academic Calendar

Fall semester: late August to mid December

Spring semester: early March to mid June

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Language and Academics

Students are enrolled in 16 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for a semester at Sogang University and typically take a total of four full courses to meet minimum requirements.

International students participating in the exchange program may register for courses offered in Korean or English to take a maximum of 21 credits per semester. Exchange students are fully integrated into the regular programs with Korean students, allowing exchange students to experience Korean culture to the fullest extent. There is a potential to take courses in other academic departments, such as Humanities, Social Science, Economics, Communication, and Natural Sciences.

Exchange students can take advantage of the Korean Language Education Center's Korean language program focused on conversational Korean and practical language skills at no additional cost.

Exchange students are eligible for housing at Gonzaga International Student Hall. It opened in August of 2008, Gonzaga accommodates up to 950 students in double rooms and is located on campus. Facilities include a global cafeteria, laundry room, prayer room and medical facilities. Rooms include a bed, desk, closet, internet phone and internet LAN (local area network). Note that rooms do not include bed or bath linens or electrical adapter (Korea uses 220 volts). Daily breakfast and dinner (only breakfast on Saturday) are included in housing fee.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

  • A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
  • In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Additional criteria may apply and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance

Application and Selection

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies.
