This year's retreat runs from April 24-26 at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge in the Brainerd Lakes Area. It is part of a series of events designed to foster greater participation by women in their workplaces, unions and communities.
Under the theme "Raising Women's Voices for Solidarity," the retreat will provide the opportunity to analyze the challenges facing women in the labor movement and help them build the confidence and skills to address them. General session and workshop topics include public policies for women's equality, examples of Minnesota unions leading on women's issues, public speaking, organizing strategies and methods for engaging younger workers.
Keynote speakers will be Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, who will share the inspiring story of her union's historic strike for public education; and Elizabeth Cuero Badillo, a leader in Colombia's port workers' union, who will describe the challenges of organizing in the world's most dangerous country for union activists.
The cost to attend ranges from $393 to $497, depending on type of lodging. To assist unions in sending younger women, LES is offering a discounted registration fee for participants age 30 and younger. The deadline to register is March 21.
Note: After you have completed the LES registration, you need to call Ruttger's to book your lodging. Call 218.678.2885 or 800-450-4545.
