Brian Agnew is Director for Economic & Policy Analysis at Pfizer. After graduating from Dartmouth College with a degree in economics, he worked for the healthcare Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) in the Health Standards and Quality Bureau, where he wrote regulations establishing sanctions for noncompliance for a variety of Medicare provider types. He later moved to the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, where he oversaw the development of quality assurance requirements for Medicare+Choice plans.
From the government, he went to the Yale School of Management, where he earned his MBA with a focus in finance. Upon completing his graduate degree, he joined Pfizer, where he does policy analysis including financial impact estimates of healthcare reform proposals. He also manages research projects focusing on access restrictions and health disparities, in close coordination with the research arms of PhRMA, BIO, and NPC, where he currently serves on the Employer Work Group.
Susan Alpert, PhD, MD, recently retired from Medtronic. She was senior vice president - chief quality and regulatory officer since 2005. She was responsible for all Medtronic quality, regulatory, and clinical compliance efforts, including overseeing health policy and payment.
Dr. Alpert joined Medtronic in July 2003 as vice president - regulatory affairs and compliance from C.R. Bard, Inc., where she was vice president of regulatory sciences. She was on the board of the Food Drug Law Institute (FDLI), a forum through which the FDA and the legal, business, academic, and consumer communities exchange perspectives on public policy, law, and regulation related to products subject to FDA jurisdiction.
Dr. Alpert also serves on the board of the Medical Technology Leadership Forum (MTLF), an educational organization that focuses on policy makers, the general public, and the media, regarding critical issues affecting the development and adoption of advanced medical technology. In addition, Dr. Alpert serves on the board of the Women Business Leaders (WBL), a healthcare organization, and is president of the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society.
Before joining Bard, Dr. Alpert served at the FDA, where she held a variety of positions in the Centers, including six years as the director of the Office of Device Evaluation. She is a microbiologist and pediatrician with a specialty in infectious diseases and has practical experience in laboratory research and clinical trials.
Dr. Alpert completed her undergraduate degree at Barnard College, Columbia University, and holds an MS and PhD in biomedical sciences from New York University. She received her MD from the University of Miami (Florida) and completed her clinical training at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, and at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Alex Clyde is Vice President of Global Health Policy, Reimbursement and Health Economics for Medtronic, Inc. In this role she provides company-wide leadership on health policy and reimbursement issues affecting medical technology. She chairs the company’s Global Reimbursement and Health Economics Leadership Council. She was the chair of the medical technology industry association’s (AdvaMed) Payment Policy Work Group from 2002-2006 and was a 2004 recipient of Medtronic’s Wallin Award - the company’s most prestigious award for exceptional business results and leadership. She was selected as a “Women in Business Industry Leader” by Minneapolis/St Paul Business Journal in 2011.Alex has participated on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) technical advisory councils on topics ranging from Coverage with Evidence Development (CED) to payment policies for new technology. She currently serves on the Executive Advisory Board of the Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health (CEVR) at Tufts Medical Center and on the Institute of Medicine’s Value Incentives Learning Collaborative. She is a member of the Heath Technology Assessment international (HTAi) health policy forum and a founding member of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) medical device and diagnostics council.
Alex graduated from Colgate University with a B.A. in Economics and from Harvard University with a M.S. in Health Policy and Management. She has guest lectured at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and The Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.
Thomas Gunderson is a managing director and senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray, following cardiology and other medical device companies. Gunderson was named a Wall Street Journal All-Star Analyst for medical stocks in 1996 and 2000.
In June 2004, Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry, a leading industry journal, named Gunderson to its 100 Notable People in the Medical Device Industry list.
Gunderson holds a bachelor's degree from Carleton College, a master's degree in cell biology from the University of Minnesota, and a master's degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas.
In June 2005, Gary Keeler became president of alternate site sales in McKesson's medical-surgical business, which delivers a comprehensive offering of healthcare products, equipment, and related services to the alternate site market, including physician offices, surgery centers, long-term care facilities, and home care businesses across the country. Prior to this, he led the primary care sales organization and held various senior management positions within the extended care organization, including president, senior vice president of sales and marketing, and vice president of sales and distribution - west.Gary has been with the organization for more than 24 years. He began his career as a customer service representative and quickly worked his way up through the sales management organization. He holds a bachelor's degree in secondary education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Shira Kelber is Director of Operations at virtuwell by HealthPartners. Â Prior to her current position, she was a consultant at McKinsey specializing in healthcare, IT, and Lean transformations. After working at Epic implementing EHRs for large healthcare systems, she spent a couple of years traveling and volunteering abroad. She returned to the USA to develop strategic initiatives for various healthcare organizations before attending law school and pursuing a master's certificate in health policy and management. Her abiding professional interest is in bettering access to healthcare, particularly for underserved populations, and improving care coordination.
Richard Manning is a partner at Bates White Economic Consulting. He has an extensive background providing analysis and thought leadership in public policy and economics for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare industries. His career includes 14 years as an executive at worldwide pharmaceutical companies where he led economic analysis and strategy development to shape business practices related to public policy issues.
Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Manning was Executive Director of Global Public Policy at Merck & Co., Inc. where he oversaw public policy analysis and strategy in worldwide markets. Previously, he was Director in the Advisory Strategy Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers and specialized in strategic partnerships, deal activity, and empirical economic analysis for several pharmaceutical clients. Dr. Manning was also Senior Director of Economic and Policy Research in the corporate affairs division at Pfizer, Inc. During his 12 years with Pfizer, his team provided economic analysis for strategic decision-making and worked with outside academic economists to foster research on key public policy issues.
Dr. Manning was an economics professor at Brigham Young University and a visiting professor in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. As an academic, his teaching and research focused on the economic analysis of law and the economics of government regulation.
Dr. Manning completed his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University, and holds an MA and PhD in economics from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Nelson founded Evergreen Medical Technologies in 2006 and serves as the company President. Previously, Mr. Nelson was responsible for the development of medical devices for 30 years at both emerging and larger medical device companies. Mr. Nelson has held management positions at St. Jude Medical Inc., Atrial Fibrillation Division; Boston Scientific Corporation, SCIMED Division; Angeion Corporation; and Cardiac Pacemakers, Inc. with earlier experience as a mechanical engineer in the design of pacemakers at Medtronic, Inc. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and a BS in Economics from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Mr. Nelson is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, where he teaches a graduate level course in the evaluation of new medical innovations. He holds 12 patents issued for medical device innovations and delivers lectures and presentations on medical device product development.
Ken Paulus became Allina Hospitals & Clinics' president and chief executive officer (CEO) in 2009. He moved into that leadership position after serving as chief operating officer (COO), responsible for the operations of Allina's 11 hospitals, specialty operations and clinic groups (Allina Medical Clinic, Aspen Medical Group and Quello Clinic). He has led numerous growth initiatives, including a number of joint ventures, partnerships and acquisitions.
Before joining Allina in 2006, Paulus was president and chief executive officer of Massachusetts-based HealthOne Care System, one of the nation's largest physician organizations and a teaching and research affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Prior to that he was chief operating officer of Boston-based Partners Community HealthCare, Inc., and chief operating officer of Alta Bates Medical Resources in Berkeley, California.
Paulus serves on the Board of Overseers for the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business, is a trustee with Hamline University, and serves on the executive committee and board of directors for the Minnesota Hospital Association.
Paulus is a Wisconsin native, was raised in Chicago, and is a 1983 graduate of the University of Minnesota Masters Program in Healthcare Administration. He earned his bachelors degree in biological sciences with a concentration in chemistry from Augustana College in Illinois.
Jamison (Jamie) Rice joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota as senior vice president and chief financial officer in 2012. In this role, Rice is responsible for providing leadership for financial controls and systems, financial planning and analysis, tax, treasury, investments, corporate finance, actuarial and underwriting.
Prior to joining Blue Cross, Rice was principal and CFO at Yukon Partners, a private capital investment firm, where he was responsible for finance, fund accounting, limited partner reporting, investor relations and transaction due diligence.
Rice's career also includes a variety of leadership positions at UnitedHealth Group, including CFO and vice president of finance of UnitedHealthcare's commercial business; CFO of UnitedHealth Networks; and director of corporate development for UnitedHealth Group. Rice also has held leadership positions in strategic planning at Best Buy and Arther Anderson in audit and transaction advisory services.
Jade Sadosty is Vice Chair of Business Development for Mayo Clinic. He has responsibility for pursuing new revenue generating activities for the enterprise including the development of overall strategies, evaluation of new opportunities, and execution of required partnerships, alliances, and ventures.
Mr. Sadosty began his career with Mayo Clinic in 2001 and has engaged in business development, new company formation, and strategic planning. Prior to joining Mayo, he served as an Intelligence Officer with the United States Air Force.
Mr. Sadosty received his undergraduate degree from the United States Air Force Academy and has a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Randall L. Schiestl, PMP, is the Vice President, R&D, Global Technology at Boston Scientific Corporation where he leads a team of talented R&D engineers and technicians chartered to develop and sustain a diverse family of minimally invasive medical devices.Â Specific responsibilities include: technology management; product design; packaging, labeling and sterilization engineering; new product development facilities and labs; knowledge management; customer focus; sustaining engineering and technical community. His engineering teams are located across multiple facilities both US and OUS.
Mr. Schiestl (Randy) has a BSME degree from the University of Minnesota, college of Science & Engineering, high distinction He also holds MBA and Executive MBA degrees from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management. Randy has completed the Medical Technology Management mini-MBA at St Thomas University and is certified as a Project Management Professional. Work history includes Honeywell, Alliant Techsystems, and Boston Scientific with functional responsibilities in project and program management, product and process development, strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, manufacturing management, supply chain, quality, test facilities, and operations.Randy received the 2011 UMAA Alumni Service Award from the University of Minnesota, College of Science & Engineering and the Design of Medical Devices Conference Award in 2012.
Carol Simon brings more than 20 years experience in health care consulting and economic policy research to her role as director of the Optum Institute for Sustainable Health Communities. Carol is responsible for driving the Optum Institute’s research agenda, including surveys, white papers and indices highlighting the key enablers of sustainable healthcare.
Prior to joining the Optum Institute, Carol was a director in the Health and Human Services Policy practice of The Lewin Group, a healthcare policy and consulting firm. The Lewin Group, owned by Optum, the health services business of UnitedHealth Group, provides policy research and data analysis on Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP, healthcare financing, strategic workforce planning, health program evaluation, comparative effectiveness research and other areas of the public health policy arena.
Before joining The Lewin Group, Carol was principal associate and fellow at Abt Associates and
associate professor and director of the Health Economics Program at Boston University.
She has directed a range of economic studies for clients in both the public and private sector. Carol has a Ph.D. in economics/industrial organization from the University of Chicago, an MBA in finance from MIT and a BS in economics from John Carroll University.
Carol has been a speaker at the Association of American Medical Colleges Workforce Research Conference, addressing the adequacy of the primary care workforce, and at AcademyHealth, addressing barriers to physician adoption of health information technology (HIT). She has published more than 40 articles on managed care, cost-effectiveness analysis and regulation in journals, including Health Affairs, Health Services Research, and The American Economic Review. She has also been cited in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Andrea Walsh is the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at HealthPartners. She has a broad range of responsibilities that include health plan and care delivery innovation and operations ranging from marketing & sales, health plan quality and network relations, well-being and disease management programs, worksite health solutions and customer service. She is responsible for communications across HealthPartners as well as public affairs and regulatory relations. She balances her time between externally working with customers and partners, and internally focusing on culture, customer experience, and strategy.
She has been with HealthPartners since 1994 in a variety of roles. Prior to that, she practiced law at Rider Bennett and Popham Haik, and was an assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Health from 1991-1993. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1988, and from the University of Kansas with a double degree in Business and English.
Walsh has a passion for youth development and community service. She serves on the Twin Cities YMCA and Minnesota Science Museum boards. She is the 2012-2013 Chair of American Heart Association’s Twin Cities Go Red for Women Campaign., and the immediate past chair of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.
