The Graduate Business Career Center (GBCC) is known as a great resource for both graduate students and those looking to attend graduate school at the Carlson School. But did you know Carlson School alumni are also welcome to utilize the GBCC? It's designed to be accessible to students and alumni at every point in their career development process.
The GBCC recognizes that current students and alumni have different needs. As a result, some of their services are tailored to alumni who are searching for job opportunities or looking to make a career change. GBCC hosts workshops for working professionals on topics like resume building and internal career transitions.
In addition, alumni can connect with experienced career coaches, have access to external job postings through the TalentLink recruiting system, and are invited to "Friends of Carlson" Happy Hours.
The GBCC also caters to alumni who reside outside the Twin Cities. Career appointments are available via phone or Skype, and workshops can be made available on demand. GBCC staff also offer evening consultations for those who work during the day.
"Many of our alumni go all over the world," says Stephen Glomb, Associate Director of the GBCC. "Many alumni don't think of us as a useful resource because they are no longer in the Twin Cities."
Glomb has noticed that many alumni came back to utilize the GBCC when they're ready to make a career change.
"[We're here for students] who are at the very beginning of their career development process, as well as alumni who have been working for 10 years and are now contemplating a career change," Glomb said.
The GBCC works with students at various points of their career journey, from when they're finding the right career path, to when they're interviewing and applying for jobs. Counselors help with cover letter and resume writing, LinkedIn profile development, networking strategies, and negotiation strategies. All of these services are also available to alumni.
"Our services are really designed to be accessible to students and alumni at any point in their career development process," Glomb says.
Alumni who are interested in connecting with the GBCC are encouraged to set up an initial appointment with a career coach by calling the GBCC at 612-624-0011. A Coach will perform an initial assessment to determine what resources would be valuable for the student or alum, then devise a tailored strategy that meets his or her unique career development goals.
