MILI Actuarial Seminar Series to Explore Repeal of Affordable Care Act

Thursday, March 03, 2011

Joseph Antos, PhD, the Wilson H. Taylor Scholar in Health Care and Retirement Policy, American Enterprise Institute, will present "Health Reform, Budget Scoring, and Fiscal Reality: What Would Repeal Do?" on Friday, March 25 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm as part of the Medial Industry Leadership Institute's Actuarial Seminar Series. The event will be held in Hanson Hall, Room 1-106.

Nearly two dozen lawsuits have been filed challenging the legality of health reform legislation enacted last March, and a repeal measure was passed in the U.S. House in January. The Congressional Budget Office says repealing the Affordable Care Act would increase the federal deficit by $230 billion over the next decade, but that estimate has been disputed. Why have CBO cost estimates played such a central role in the debate over health reform? How realistic is CBO's estimate? How would the nation's finances fare if the reform legislation is repealed--or not?

Joseph Antos is the Wilson H. Taylor Scholar in Health Care and Retirement Policy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). He also is a member of the Panel of Health Advisers for the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and a Commissioner of the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission. Prior to joining AEI, Antos was Assistant Director for Health and Human Resources at the CBO, and he held senior positions in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Management and Budget, and the President's Council of Economic Advisers. Antos has written, lectured, and testified before Congress on the economics of health policy, including Medicare and broader health system reform, health care financing, health insurance regulation, and the uninsured. His articles have appeared in the American Economic Review, Health Affairs, New England Journal of Medicine, National Tax Journal, and other scholarly publications.

The Actuarial Scholarship Program and Seminar Series are sponsored by UnitedHealth Group.
