MBA Charity Auction Boldly Sets Fundraising Mark

Monday, March 14, 2011

The fifth annual Carlson MBA Charity Auction knocked it out of the park raising more than $25,000, the highest total in its history, and surpassing last year's $15,000. The event, held March 4 at Target Field's Champions Club, was attended by nearly 300 students, faculty, staff, and friends of the MBA program.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit Bolder Options, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of 10- to 14-year-olds through a one-to-one activity-based mentoring program. The organization uses running and biking, academic goal setting, and volunteerism to build self-esteem and encourage healthy lifestyle habits.

"It costs $2,500 to support a youth through one year of Boulder Options, so the money we raised will help fund an additional 10 kids through this amazing program," says Neelima Boddipalli, Full-Time MBA '11 and president of Carlson 4 Community (C4C).

"We also hope the auction increased awareness of and interest in getting involved with this great organization."

The MBA Charity Auction is the flagship event of the C4C student organization. C4C strives to promote volunteerism and community involvement both at the Carlson School and in the surrounding community. This past September, 20 MBA students and Carlson School staff participated in the Bolder Dash - a race around Lake Nokomis to help raise awareness and funds for Bolder Options.

"The C4C board's vision is to make the auction a gala event through which the Carlson School can bring together all members of its MBA program and showcase its commitment to the community in which we live," adds Boddipalli.

The 2011 Carlson 4 Community student board included the following first and second-year Full-Time MBA students: Neelu Boddipalli (president), Lucas Kinzel, VP-Finance, Camila Hallemeier, VP-Marketing, Rama Boddipalli, VP-Corporate Sponsorships and Donations, Peter Berens, VP-Logistics, Adrian Cook, VP-Auction, Rachel Endress, Assistant VP, Erik Rasmussen, Assistant VP, and Liz Woodwick, Assistant VP.

Part-Time MBA and Executive MBA students supported the auction by soliciting donations and engaging students from their programs to attend the event.

Among the 197 items up for bid included a weekend stay in Colorado, prime seats at a Timberwolves/Miami Heat game, fine wine, an iPod Touch, and much more.

"Everyone involved with this event is to be congratulated for their fine work in continuing to build the momentum of the annual charity auction," says Kathryn Carlson, assistant dean, MBA Programs and Graduate Business Career Center.
