Third group graduates from Minnesota Union Leadership Program

The third cohort in the Minnesota Union Leadership Program graduated May 16 with a ceremony on the University's St. Paul campus.

Over the course of nine months, the students attended six full-day class sessions on topics ranging from history and the economy to organizing and leadership. The group included officers, staff and rank-and-file members from a variety of unions.

ChristaCROP-Steve100x100.jpg"This class has reminded me we are all part of the labor movement and it's our responsibility to grow the movement," said Christa Mello, a staff member at UNITE HERE Local 17. "I got to meet members of a lot of unions and we were able to learn from each other."

Latonya-podium-cropSM.jpgAdded LaTonya Smith of OPEIU Local 12: "You learn about history, about labor law, about the economy. You meet people from other unions and learn how your struggle is the same as everyone else's struggle."

Minnesota AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Steve Hunter presented certificates to the graduates and praised their commitment to the labor movement.

The Minnesota Union Leadership Program is a unique educational opportunity offered by the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service. The fourth group will start attending classes in September.
