What Makes an Online Community Successful?

SOBACO professors Ching Ren, Loren Terveen, John Riedl, and their co-authors, recently published Building member attachment in online communities: Applying theories of group identity and interpersonal bonds in the MIS Quarterly. Their research sought to discover why online communities are increasingly important to organizations and the general public, and what makes some online communities more successful than others.

It was found that often online communities fail because the individuals that design them do so with little knowledge of how to make them successful. Research indicated that online communities needed to be carefully cultivated by connecting members via topics of interest or connecting members with other like-minded members.
