It was a big year for faculty, instructors and PhD students from the Department of Work and Organizations (WOrg) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AoM), where more than 8,000 academic attendees from 88 countries gathered in Orlando in August.
AoM's Annual Meeting provides a forum for sharing research and expertise in all management disciplines through invited and competitive paper sessions, panels, symposia, workshops, speakers and special programs for doctoral students. Research by WOrg faculty, instructors and PhD students were featured in many sessions throughout the 2013 meeting.
Professor Connie Wanberg's symposium, "Some Events Just Matter More than Others: Advances in the Study of Individuals' Transitions," won the AoM Careers Division 2012 Best Symposium of the Year Award. Two of Wanberg's papers, "New Directions in Understanding Job Search: A Self-Regulatory Perspective," and "Balancing Multiple Research Demands," were featured in sessions this year. Instructor Min Li won a 2013 Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. In addition, a paper by Assistant Professors Lisa Leslie and Colleen Manchester and PhD student Patty Dahm titled, "Ironic Effects of Flexible Work Practices on Parents' Career Success," was reviewed as one of the best accepted papers in the GDO program and was published in the Best Paper Proceedings of the 2013 Academy of Management Meeting.
Many WOrg faculty and PhD students had a first-hand experience with the meeting by presenting, or influencing, sessions. Professor Michelle Duffy both chaired and presented in a session with PhD student Lingtao Yu, on a paper focusing on envy at work titled, "Psychological mechanisms explaining the effects of envy on its consequences." Duffy served as a panelist for a session on Mindfulness, and was a faculty participant in a doctoral consortium. PhD student Gabe Licht presented a paper he co-authored with Professors Sophie Leroy and Kathleen Vohs titled, "Unethical Behavior for Self or Collective Benefit: The Role of Self-Construal," in a session on motivators of unethical behavior. Associate Professor John Kammeyer-Mueller was unable to attend the meeting, but papers he co-authored, "Use of proactive tactics and P-O fit," and "Performance predicted by specific cognitive aptitudes versus GMA," were featured in two of the sessions.
In addition, Professor Theresa Glomb was a panelist for a doctoral consortium titled "Careers in Context: Integrating Work with other Life Roles."
Two additional honors were bestowed to Minnesota attendees during the Annual Meeting: Senior Lecturer Mike Davis, Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources at General Mills, was awarded the 2013 Distinguished HR Executive Award, which is given to executives who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers in the field of human resources management. And PhD Student Youngjun Choi received a SHRM Foundation Dissertation Grant for his dissertation, "New employee socialization: The roles of social networks."
