Joseph Konstan Named SOBACO Co-Academic Director

Professor Joseph Konstan has been named co-academic director of the Social Media and Business Analytics Collaborative (SOBACO) housed at the Carlson School.

Konstan is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Distinguished University Teaching Professor, and Associate Department Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His research addresses a variety of human-computer interaction issues, with a focus on social computing. His work includes personalization (particularly through recommender systems), eliciting on-line participation, and designing computer systems to improve public health. He is best known for his work in collaborative filtering recommenders, namely the GroupLens project, which won the prestigious 2010 ACM Software Systems Award.

He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993. He is a Fellow of the ACM and the AAAS; an elected member of the CHI Academy; and past president of ACM SIGCHI, the 4500-member special interest group on human-computer interaction. He is currently serving on ACM's Council and Publications Board, and co-chairing a 2013 workshop co-sponsored by ACM, NSF, and the CCC to explore research directions in social computing.

Konstan is joining his Carlson School counterpart, Professor Ravi Bapna, to further the research, education, and outreach mission of SOBACO. Bapna, the founding academic director of SOBACO, is the Board of Overseers Professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the Carlson School. He received his BT in computer engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology at Mangalore University, India and his PhD in business administration, operations, and information management from the University of Connecticut. His research interests are in the areas of economics of information systems, social media, big-data analytics, peer influence, human capital issues in the IT services industry, online auctions, e-market design, Grid computing, and the design of the IT organization.
