Objective:

This course introduces students to the design and use of costing systems to support key operating and strategic decisions of business firms. Students gain an international view point on these topics. Accounting 3001 is an invigorating opportunity for students to fulfill Carlson School’s Functional Core Accounting course (ACCT 3001) with study in both the U.S. and Argentina.

January 5 - 16, 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Classes begin Fall Term B on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 pm – 7:45 pm at the Carlson School

30 University of Minnesota Undergraduate students

Credits:

3 credits that substitute for Carlson’s ACCT 3001 requirement. Grading is A-F basis.

Location:

As the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires offers student the elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America. Known as the “Paris of the Americas” its identity is founded on Spanish, Italian, and French influences, which appear in the grand boulevards, and magnificent architecture. While exploring the city's neighborhoods, visit the small colored houses of La Boca and experience the popular tango that lives in San Telmo streets.

Schedule:

The program starts with a city tour and welcome dinner. During the two weeks students will meet with local business professionals through guest lectures and company site visits. Companies include both domestic and multinational corporations. Cultural tours, dinner with an Argentine family, and tango dancing will complement the academic program. The weekend is free for students to explore the city or particpate in excursions outside of the city.

Housing and Food:

Students are housed in double or triple rooms at a centrally located hotel.  Breakfast will be provided at the hotel. A welcome dinner, closing dinner, and one additional dinner are provided.

Costs & Financial Aid:

Participants pay a $3,750 program fee directly to the University of Minnesota. This fee covers tuition for three credits, international health insurance, round trip airfare, lodging in Argentina, three group meals and activities, and all breakfasts. Students are responsible for purchasing their own course textbooks. Other meals and personal expenses are not covered by the course fee. Fees are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. Financial Aid can be applied to study abroad programs.

Application & Admission:

Visit our website to complete an online application. Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Students will be charged a $50.00 application fee. Applications will be accepted until September 2, 2008. The program may fill before the deadline.

The Accounting 3001 Global Enrichment program will have a demanding schedule and academic standards will be high. Candidates should demonstrate their motivation and ability to engage fully in the academic program in the application materials and essay. Preference will be given to Carlson School students.

This program is open to U of M undergraduate students in good academic standing, with a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Students must also have completed ACCT 2050 by Fall Term B. The application process is competitive, and space is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
