Norway Summer Program: Intercultural Management

Objective:

This program offers students the opportunity to focus on Scandinavian and Norwegian business and intercultural management. The program features lectures by highly qualified faculty from BI Norwegian School of Management. Students will gain insights into Scandinavian business perspectives through company site visits, case studies, classes on Norwegian life and society, and social and cultural activities. This course will help students understand the global business environment through a rigorous learning environment and an emphasis on intercultural business practices.

Audience »

10 - 15 Carlson undergraduate students; classes will be a mix of students from the United States, Eastern and Western Europe, Latin American, and Asia.

Academic Credit »

4 elective credits. Grading is S-N basis.

Eligibility »

This program is open to Carlson undergraduate students in good academic standing, with a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. The application process is competitive, and space is limited.  Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Location »

As the capital of Norway, Oslo offers an immersion in a highly dynamic and growing economy. Norway enjoys an abundance of key natural resources and the traditionally focused industries of oil, shipping, and fishing, have expanded to include hydropower and information technology innovations. Oslo is a thriving city offering a wide range of social, cultural, and outdoor adventure activities.

BI is one of Norway’s largest institutions with 60% market share of business and industry education, and it is the largest single provider of applied business knowledge in the country. BI offers ultra-modern learning facilities with cutting edge technology and dedicated faculty with a strong understanding of global business practices.

The program starts with a mandatory orientation and city tour the first weekend. Students then have classes in intercultural management, company visits, and cultural activities Monday through Friday for three weeks. Weekends include social and cultural activities arranged by BI, with time free for travel and sightseeing in and around Oslo. Please visit the BI website for more information and program details.

Housing and Food »

Students live in residence halls with US, and international students on the program. All accommodations include a shared kitchen and bathroom. All rooms are wired for internet access. Single rooms are available for an extra fee. Students have full access to BI facilities including computer labs and libraries. 

Cost Estimate »

Participants pay a $3,000 program fee directly to the University of Minnesota. This fee includes tuition for four credits, international health insurance, and fees. Airfare, meals, housing, and personal expenses are not covered by the course fee. Students should budget approximately $1,500 - $2,000 for room, board, and miscellaneous living expenses. Costs are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. Financial Aid can be applied to study abroad programs. 

Financial Aid & Scholarships »

Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad. In addition, University of Minnesota students are eligible for education abroad scholarships. Visit the funding your education abroad for additional information on financial aid and scholarships.

Application & Admission »

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Students will be charged a $50.00 application fee. Application deadline is January 30, 2010.

Applications will be reviewed and students will be informed of their status within 4 weeks of the application deadline. If selected, students will be charged a $500 non-refundable deposit to confirm a place in the program.
