Undergraduate Short Term in Norway


Norwegian Summer ProgramIntercultural Management

Objective: 
This program offers students the opportunity to focus on Scandinavian and Norwegian business and intercultural management. The program features lectures by highly qualified faculty from BI Norwegian School of Management. Students will gain insights into Scandinavian business perspectives through company site visits, case studies, classes on Norwegian life and society, and social and cultural activities. This course will help students understand the global business environment through a rigorous learning environment and an emphasis on intercultural business practices.

Dates:
June 20 - July 10, 2009 in Oslo, Norway (tentative)

Audience:

10 - 15 Carlson undergraduate students; classes will be a mix of students from the United States, norway - scEastern and Western Europe, Latin American, and Asia.

Credit:
4 elective credits. Grading is S-N basis.

Location:
As the capital of Norway, Oslo offers an immersion in a highly dynamic and growing economy. Norway enjoys an abundance of key natural resources and the traditionally focused industries of oil, shipping, and fishing, have expanded to include hydropower and information technology innovations. Oslo is a thriving city offering a wide range of social, cultural, and outdoor adventure activities.
 
BI is one of Norway’s largest institutions with 60% market share of business and industry education, and it is the largest single provider of applied business knowledge in the country.  BI offers ultra-modern learning facilities with cutting edge technology and dedicated faculty with a strong understanding of global business practices. 

Schedule:
The program starts with a mandatory orientation and city tour the first weekend. Students then have classes in intercultural management, company visits, and cultural activities Monday through Friday for three weeks. Weekends include social and cultural activities arranged by BI, with time free for travel and sightseeing in and around Oslo. 

Housing and Food:
Students live in residence halls with US, and international students on the program. All accommodations include a shared kitchen and bathroom. All rooms are wired for internet access. Single rooms are available for an extra fee. Students have full access to BI facilities including computer labs and libraries. 
  

Costs and Financial Aid:
Participants pay a $3,000 program fee directly to the University of Minnesota. This fee covers tuition for four credits, international health insurance, and fees. Students are responsible for purchasing their own course textbooks. Airfare, meals, housing, and personal expenses are not covered by the course fee. Students should budget approximately $1,500 - $2,000 for room, board, and miscellaneous living expenses. Fees are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. Financial Aid can be applied to study abroad programs. 


Scholarships:
Scholarships are available, and open to all students nominated to this program. Applications will be accepted online in April. Both merit based and financial need based awards are available. Students will be required to submit an essay with their application.

Application and Admission:
Download an application from the Applications page and submit a completed application with a $50 application fee, transcript, resume and essay. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from January 2- January 30, 2009.   The program may fill before the deadline.

This program is open to Carlson undergraduate students in good academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. The application process is competitive, and space is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
