Housing Scholarships Available

The Alpha Kappa Psi Scholarship Fund is awarding housing scholarships to students who attend the Carlson School of Management who have strong academic records and leadership experience. This year, up to six scholarships will be awarded, each worth $8,400 for twelve months of housing at the Alpha Kappa Psi house.  You do not have to be a member of Alpha Kappa Psi to qualify for these scholarships, but scholarship recipients are required to live at the Alpha Kappa Psi house. Alpha Kappa Psi members will not be given preferential treatment for these scholarships.  You must apply for these scholarships by January 26, 2009.  Application requirements are available here: akpsionline.com/09AKPsiScholarships.pdf

GLOBE Buddy Program for All Students
GLOBE needs your help. We are looking for students interested in being buddies for the new international students next semester. We are asking that you answer their questions before and after they arrive, pick them up from the airport if you can, help them out, and show them around.

If you are interested in being a buddy please email globe.umn@gmail.com with the country of your preference and the email address you would like your buddy to contact you at.  We have exchange students coming from Spain, Brazil, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Thailand next semester.

Carlson Building Wireless Network Upgrade

During the week of January 5, University Network and Telecommunications group will be upgrading the Carlson network to the new wireless N technology. To configure and connect to "U of M Secure" setting, a one time login is required, and it is like running VPN in the background. Please visit carlsonschool.umn.edu/wireless for instructions.

Email Security and Phishing
Beware of email scams and do not reply to inquiries asking you to verify your private or student information. The University NEVER asks for a student to send their password via email.  Please delete any emails and do not respond to them if they ask you for private security information.


Breakout Room Access
If you are having difficulty with accessing a breakout room, send an email to advisbsb@umn.edu with "Room Access" in the subject line.

Please include the following information in your email so that we can help resolve the issue:

• Your name and student ID number
• The 11 digits following 600953 on the front of your U Card
• The first five orange numbers located on the back upper right corner of your U Card
• The breakout room number, date & time of occurrence, (i.e. Carlson School L-107, 11/18/08, 3:00 p.m.)
• Description of issue

Accounting Student 2008 Essay Contest

U of M China Center Language Partner Program

The goals of this program are:

• To help Chinese students and scholars at the University of Minnesota improve their English by providing them opportunities to talk with native speakers

• To help Americans improve their Chinese. Most Americans enrolled in this program are students whose major is Chinese or who are learning Chinese as a second language.

To enroll in this program you can either call the China Center at 612-624-1002 or email chinactr@umn.edu. Please make sure you indicate the following information:

• Your name
• Your email address
• Your gender
• Your native language
• Your major or interest
• Your preferred phone number (optional)

After we've received your information, we'll search our database and try to find the right match for you. Once we've found a match, we'll notify you and give you an email address so that you can contact your partner directly. Both of you can decide how to arrange your language exchange. If there isn't a language partner match at the time of your request, we'll notify you and place your name on our waiting list. Please call us at 612-624-1002 and let us know whether your exchange partnership is working. If not, we can find another partner for you.

Breakfast is also included.

Gotta Mentor and The AlumniAthlete Network are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2009 AlumniAthlete Wall Street Internship Program. The Wall Street Internship Program provides collegiate sophomores and juniors paid internships at the most prestigious investment banking firms in the world. This 10-week, paid internship program is targeted to students who have displayed leadership, teamwork, initiative, and the ability to perform under pressure.  The internship is open to both student-athletes and non-athletes. The early application deadline is December 19 and the regular decision application deadline is January 23.

The Business Career Center is planning an event in Washington DC where you can meet recruiters and representatives from: PBS, World Bank, National Geographic, Booz Allen, Grameen, Department of Defense and more! This event is open to all CSOM students! There will be a combination of presentations and on-site visits. The trip takes place January 12-14, 2009. You are responsible for your own transportation and lodging expenses. Deadline for registering for the trip has been extended to 12/19/08. Please sign up for the trip by RSVPing on CARS. Please do not purchase your airline tickets until the trip has been confirmed by the UBCC.

Fellowships for U of M students to serve as interns in elementary schools in Berlin, Germany. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Interns work in an English-language classroom four days a week. One day is open for research and other activities. Program duration: June 6 to July 4, 2009. German language proficiency preferred but not required. Up to 15 fellowships are available.


Freshman Career Exploration Workshop (3-part workshop)

Are you a freshman who is feeling unsure of what career you want to pursue? This three session career exploration workshop will feature a tour of the Undergraduate Business Career Center, and a discussion of how you can use the Strengths Finder assessment, as well as other career assessments you will take, to help you discover possible careers that are right for you. You will also learn tools and resources for exploring the careers that interest you. Dinner will be served during the workshops. To participate, you must attend all three workshops and be prepared to do a little homework between sessions. Sessions are on: 2/25/09, 3/4/09, 3/11/09 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. RSVP on CARS!
